Images of Egyptian soldiers savagely beating unarmed female demonstrators has enraged women globally. One widely disseminated video of a young woman who was half stripped and stomped on by soldiers on Dec. 17 (dubbed "blue bra woman") inspired 10,000 women in Cairo to march against military rule which has virtually excluded women in post-Mubarak Egypt.
The attacks against these revolutionaries underscores the reality that Egyptian women have had to wage their battle for justice on two fronts: freedom from dictatorial -- now military -- rule and an entrenched system of misogeny that precludes a civilized society.
Women involved with the Occupy Wall Street movement expressed solidarity with Egyptian women in a December 21 statement.
The statement praised the Egyptian women and stated "women are powerful and essential forces in revolutions."
